BEHIND THE LOOKS :-)
at 16, i wrote this song about and for myself. i’m talking to me in second-person POV. for a while, like most teenagers, i was grappling with conflicts like identity, belonging, self-acceptance, and security. i was raised in my mom’s house. it was a requirement to be very much Christian and, the older i got, the more i felt like an exile internally. eggs were also the only meal i could confidently make, lol. although i haven’t lived with him since i was a kid, my dad and i have always been a lot closer due to the fact that he’s never held any high expectations for me; he’s always just wanted me to do whatever makes me happy. he’s never judged me or shamed me for expressing myself and encouraged me through every phase. my mom is awesome, but we weren’t close when i was growing up because i felt like religion made it hard for me to be completely open with her. thankfully, our relationship is much better now, but sixteen year-old mindi only knew how to channel her feelings into song. eggs aisle is a result of that. i recorded this song the same night i recorded pine & ginger, even though it came out 2 years later. even though i feel like i’ve outgrown the lyrics, it’s still a very, very special song to me. thank you to swavy, bad one, and valleyz for producing such a sick beat.
